EXPERIENCES DON’T DICTATE WHO GOD IS

My first semester of college, I was 6 and a half hours from home experiencing all sorts of change, homesickness, and disappointment. With all the change, I continuously reminded myself that God was not changing. I started making a list of characteristics of God that are TRUE, followed by a statement that makes it feel like they’re not.

I’m more of a “practical tips and tricks” writer, but this kind of reads like a poem. My prayer is that as you read this list or poem or whatever you want to call it, you are reminded of God’s character and how these attributes apply to your present circumstance.

He is constant when everything is changing.

He is friend when I feel lonely.

He is provider when I am waiting on something. (Jehovah Jireh)

He’s working even when I don’t see or feel it.

He is a sure, steady constant when there are so many unknowns.

He is healer even when I'm not healed. (Jehovah Rapha)

He is with me (Immanuel) and for me when it feels like no one else is.

He is comforter when I need to be comforted.

He is good when my circumstances are not.

He is faithful when I am faithless.

He is a promise keeper even when I haven't seen the promise fulfilled yet.

He is protector when weapons of the enemy come against me. (read Isaiah 43:2, Isaiah 54:17)

He is peace when I am in the storm. (read Mark 4:35-41, Philippians 4:7)

Whatever circumstances you find yourself navigating right now, know that you are not alone and know that your God is a good father.

Sometimes we have to remind ourselves of the truth of God and put ourselves in the physical posture of knowing who He is even when our heart doesn’t feel it. You may not feel the goodness of God, but it is there. Remind yourself of truth and wait till your heart matches.
