CatholicVote weighed in on a new Wall Street Journal

CatholicVote, weighed in on  a new Wall Street Journal / NORC poll released March 27th which found that American values have sharply declined since 1998? Only 38% of Americans polled in 2023 found love of country to be "very important" as compared to an overwhelming 70% in 1998, indicating that Americans are abandoning the values that once defined us as a great nation and culture.

Other key findings from the poll include:

  • 30% of Americans today believe having children is “very important,” compared to 60% in 1998

  • 39% of Americans today believe religion is "very important," compared to 60% in 1998

  • Participants identifying as Republicans and Democrats demonstrated wide divergence of opinions on questions of gender identity, race relations, pronoun mandates, and values in general, but were in agreement when it came to financial values: 45% of each party agreed that money was “very important” to them.

While the poll is disheartening for most, CatholicVote's Director of Communications, Josh Mercer, said that Americans, and especially those of faith, must remember that "the darkest times are when the faithful are called to be more bold in proclaiming the truths of our faith, not less.

“While none of these stats are a surprise to anyone who has been following cultural trends, those trends are bleak. As Catholics, we know that faith, family, and – in a pluralistic society – tolerance are the building blocks of a nation. We should take the poll as a reminder that we really are fighting for the soul of our nation, and the stakes are high."
